19-05-2010: PORTUGAL'S PORTO DAY 2

A beautiful start of the day! Coffee fix from a cafe a few shops down.. Amazing coffee! Just what I needed.

Started to walk into the City Centre and came across a few interesting signs. This ones for you EDU! (Ehem, Dj Bastos)...

Porto had a load of street art, which I wanted to capture throughout our stay in Porto... "It is tal-ent!"...

MJ - Rest In Peace!...

We were in luck that Torre dos Clerigos was open. A 76m high tower built in the 1700's which provided a birds eye view of the city. We climbed round about 225 stairs to the top...

Amazing view of Porto!...

Jr managed to get some snaps....

Lello Bookstore!!! This amazing Old World bookstore features floor-to-ceiling wood book cabinets, pressed copper detailing, a rail track for a cart that allows the manager to move large volumes of books around, and most prominently, the amazing Escher-like staircase that completely dominates the interior.

Beautiful Baroque style architecture!

The heat was getting to us while we were walking and exploring Porto...

Porto had beautiful tile work on majority of their buildings, Churches, shops and homes...

We decided to take a break - Gelato!! Yum!!

With all the walking we did, we got a bit hungry and stopped off at a local cafe with an array of yummy goodies! Fried food! haha.

Did more walking and sight-seeing...

Group shot!!!

Saw The River Douro, Walked along the top of the Dom Luis I Bridge... amazing views along the river...

Local kids were up for a challenge and decided to jump off the bridge... Caused a spectacle with Locals and Tourists watching, capturing photos. And I was one of them!

We walked along the array of Wineries, deciding which one to go to... Porto is famous for their PORT... Sweet (dessert?) wine...

We snuck in a beer before we headed in... HAHA. The weather provoked you!

Vasconcellos, was the one we decided to go into. A one original family business which slowly grew. They only supply within the country and do not export, which was why we had to buy it and try it out..

The longer Port is in the barrel, the darker the Port. Short period of Port in the barrel, the lighter the colour. Two types of Port, white and red. Port isn't like majority of wines, it stays the same and doesn't taste any better with age.

Let the Port tasting begin!!

A well informed Port Tasting! We walked out with 2 bottles between us to share along the river bank...

We didn't have cups, so I made my rounds along the street finding a cafe or pub that would allow to share their services. Lucky I found on of the main street and asked politely. The man was nice enough to give his plastic cups for free, but I insisted on giving him my Euro shrapnel. Happy times! I was so proud to come back to the group with 5 plastic cups, as the boys failed to be 'hunter gatherers'. :)

It was chilled out in the sun, drinking Port and talking BS. I loved it here...

Instead of climbing up the stairs like the day before, we went on the tram to save our legs. Ended up be the same cost of a metro-tram ride. We thought it would have been pricey!

Back to the same place we had been before, snacking on fried Portuguese style food!... In the long-run, it really wasn't good for us!

We then headed back to our Hostel and chilled in the rec-arean (it was a pretty well facilitated hostel). We continued drinking our Port, got tipsy while playing 'The Alphabet Game' haha.

It was a late night... Jainnie and Vi-J-J had to head to their hotel, which wasn't far. They cabbed it there and we later found out how cheap their fare was! Love Porto!!!
